A pamphlet reporting Jenner's observation in rural Gloucestershire that dairy workers who had caught cowpox did not later catch smallpox. Why

Jenner took matter from a cowpox sore on a milkmaid's hand and scratched it into a boy's arm. The boy developed a sore at the site. Days later, Jenner scratched the same boy with matter from a smallpox pustule. No pustules appeared. Jenner called this proof that cowpox protects against smallpox. The physical events are real. A person standing in the room could have seen the sore, seen the scratching, and seen whether the boy got sick. That is independent observation. The problem is what Jenner did with the result. He had already decided cowpox grants perfect and permanent security. When the boy developed a fever after the smallpox challenge, Jenner did not say the protection failed. He said the fever proved the boy had a mild case of smallpox, which proved the protection worked. The claim could not lose. A person who stayed healthy confirmed the protection. A person who got sick confirmed the protection was partial but real. The design had no outcome that would have made Jenner walk away from his claim. The observation was honest. The interpretation was not.

Why

Jenner's work sits at the foundation of virology. He claimed that an invisible agent in cowpox matter produces a mild disease and trains the body against smallpox. He never isolated the agent. He took liquid from a sore, put it in a cut, and interpreted what happened through the model he was building. The model named the agent, defined the disease, and supplied the meaning of every outcome. When people stayed healthy after challenge, the model said the agent had granted immunity. When people got sick, the model said the protection was incomplete or the take was imperfect. The terrain of the patient, the condition of the skin, the nutrition, the sanitation, the poisoning from previous medical treatments, none of these were the cause. The invisible agent was the cause and the cure. That is the structure Jenner established. The allopathic model inherited it. Symptoms are the disease. The agent is the enemy. Suppressing the agent is the treatment. The body's own condition is irrelevant. A boy with a sore on his arm and a fever was not a person whose terrain was damaged. He was a battlefield where the claimed virus fought the claimed immune system. The framework never tested that premise. It built every observation on top of it.
