What this work is
A pamphlet reporting Jenner's observation in rural Gloucestershire that dairy workers who had caught cowpox did not later catch smallpox. It presents about two dozen case histories, then his experiment: inoculating a boy, James Phipps, with matter from a cowpox sore and afterwards with smallpox matter, which produced no disease. Jenner proposes cowpox inoculation as protection against smallpox.
Then and now
Jenner scratched cowpox matter into a boy and saw no pustules after a later smallpox scratch. Vaccination takes its name from his cow, and the vaccine program cites him as its founder. His work moved matter from sores and never showed a virus, and nobody has seen one.

Why
The sores, the scratching, and who fell sick are things a stranger in the room could see, and the outcome was what happened to bodies, not a test built to find an agent. But Jenner named no result that would make him drop the claim. When the boy ran a fever after the smallpox challenge, he read it as a mild case that proved the protection.

Why
Jenner's work sits at the base of virology. He claimed an agent in cowpox matter gives a mild disease and protects against smallpox, but he never isolated it. He moved liquid from a sore into a cut and read the outcome through the model. A person who stayed well was protected. A person who fell ill had an imperfect take. Modern virology answers its failures the same way, with waning immunity and mismatched variants. The patient's condition, food, and surroundings are never asked about.

The first boy whom I inoculated with the matter of Cow-pox, slept in a bed, while the experiment was going forward, with two children who never had gone through either that disease or the Small-pox, without infecting either of them.
