What this work is
A dentist's account of travels in the 1930s to isolated communities in the Swiss Alps, the Outer Hebrides, the Arctic, North America, the Pacific islands, Africa, Australia, and Peru. In each place Price examined teeth and photographed faces, comparing people on their traditional diet with relatives who had switched to white flour, sugar, and canned goods. He reports more tooth decay and narrower dental arches in the modernized groups, and analyzes the nutrient content of the traditional foods.

Why
Price traveled to isolated communities across the world and found people from the same racial stock eating two different diets. One group ate traditional foods. The other ate modern processed foods. He photographed their teeth, their faces, and their bodies. The people on traditional diets had straight teeth, broad dental arches, and well-formed faces. The people on modern foods had decayed teeth, narrowed arches, and facial deformities. He counted tooth decay and reported a thirty-five-fold increase in susceptibility among modernized groups. None of this required a model-dependent instrument. A camera recorded what was there. A stranger looking at the photographs sees teeth and faces, not theory. The comparison could have shown no difference between the two groups. It did not. The groups were defined by diet, which is a physical fact about what people eat, not a conclusion smuggled in through a diagnostic test. The outcomes are physical features anyone can inspect. The observation does not depend on the conclusion, and the conclusion does not define the observation.

Why
Terrain theory holds that the condition of the host determines health, and that condition is observable without first accepting a pathogen model. Price's work embodies this directly. He looked at what happened to human bodies when the nutritional terrain changed. He did not diagnose disease using model-dependent tests and then cite the diagnosis as proof. He looked at teeth, faces, and bone formation. When people ate traditional foods, their bodies developed one way. When they ate modern foods, their bodies developed another way. The body's response to terrain damage is visible in the photographs. Tooth decay is not a theory. A deformed dental arch is not an interpretation. These are physical facts about a body that was not given what it needed to build itself correctly. The allopathic model would call tooth decay a disease to be treated. Price called it evidence that the terrain was broken. The distinction matters because suppressing tooth decay with a filling does not fix the nutritional deficiency that caused it. Price showed the cause by showing what happened when the cause was removed and then reintroduced. That is observation built from the ground up.

Search for controls among remnants of primitive racial stocks has been resorted to as a result of failure to find them in our modernized groups or to find the controlling factors by applying laboratory methods to the affected clinical material.
The data presented show the level of susceptibility to dental caries (tooth decay) in each isolated primitive group and, contrasted with that, the level of susceptibility in the modernized natives of the same stock.
These data reveal an average increase in susceptibility of thirty-five fold.
