A chemistry paper on pus cells collected from surgical bandages. Miescher digested the cells with pepsin, extracted the nuclei with dilute alkali, precipitated a phosphorus-rich substance with acid, and reported its elemental composition. He named the substance nuclein and proposed it as a distinct class of cell constituent tied to the nucleus.
