1892 · Max von Pettenkofer
Ueber Cholera mit Berücksichtigung der jüngsten Choleraepidemie in Hamburg
What this work is
Pettenkofer's 1892 paper written after the Hamburg cholera epidemic. To test Koch's claim that the comma bacillus alone causes cholera, he drank a live culture and recorded his symptoms for a week, and his colleague Emmerich did the same with a larger dose. Both got diarrhea and recovered, and Pettenkofer argued that cholera also needs a local factor in soil and groundwater.
Then and now
Pettenkofer and Emmerich drank live cholera cultures grown by Koch's methods and did not get cholera. Germ theory kept the bacillus as the sole cause and explained the result away as weak cultures and lucky resistance. The bacillus causing cholera on its own is what nobody has seen.
Verdict
SCIENTIFIC
The work follows the scientific method and does not operate inside a theoretical framework. The verdict is scientific.
1·This work · no theoretical framework
SCIENTIFIC
Follows the scientific method. No theoretical framework attached.
2·Paradigm · Basic Epidemiological Comparison
NOT APPLICABLE
No theoretical framework. The study verdict decides.
How the verdict is decided
This work does not operate inside a theoretical framework. Using hospital records, billing codes, or diagnostic names as labels on visible events is not the same as depending on that framework. The verdict is the work methodology score alone.
1·This work
Did this work test its claim with methods that are independent, falsifiable, and non-circular?
SCIENTIFIC
This study claims that swallowing live cholera germs grown in broth does not by itself cause cholera, because the author and a colleague who drank the cultures got only diarrhea and recovered. All three tests pass.
Independently Verifiable
Pass
The outcome was the author's own body: watery stools, gurgling guts, a temperature of 36.7 and a pulse of 86, all recorded by a man watching himself, no microscope needed to see whether he collapsed.
Falsifiable
Pass
If the drink had put either man into the collapse and endless rice-water purging of cholera, the claim that the germs alone cannot do it would have been falsified in that diary, and both men risked exactly that outcome by drinking.
Non-Circular
Pass
The culture was grown by the other side's method and swallowed as a challenge to the other side's claim, so nothing in the design was built to confirm the author's own conclusion.
Why
The outcome was his own body: stools, temperature, and pulse, which a stranger could watch. If either man had collapsed with cholera, the claim would have been falsified, and both risked exactly that by drinking. The culture came from the other side's method and was used against the other side's claim, so nothing was built to confirm his own conclusion.
2·Paradigm · Basic Epidemiological Comparison
The three tests do not apply. There is no theoretical framework.
NOT APPLICABLE
Why
The method here is a challenge test. The hypothesis came from the germ camp, but the test does not need the germ camp to be true to run. A liquid was prepared by the other side's own technique, a man swallowed it in front of witnesses, and the observation was whether his body broke down in the way the theory predicted. Someone who rejects every germ claim still sees a man drink and a man stay on his feet. That is counting visible events in a defined condition, so there is no framework here to score at the second layer. The verdict rests on the diary itself: a hostile test, honestly reported, with the author's own body as the instrument.
