1867 · Joseph Lister
On the Antiseptic Principle in the Practice of Surgery
What this work is
Lister's 1867 paper on dressing wounds with carbolic acid. He treated compound fractures, amputations, and abscesses with carbolic acid under a sealed dressing and reports that they healed without the pus, fever, and deaths usual at the time. He explains the results by germs from the air that the acid kills.
Then and now
Lister showed that wounds dressed with carbolic acid healed without the usual pus and fever. Germ theory made him the founder of antiseptic surgery and cites him as proof that germs from the air cause infection. He watched wounds heal, and nobody has seen a germ cause the rot.
Verdict
UNSCIENTIFIC
The work follows the scientific method inside its paradigm. The paradigm itself does not pass. The worse layer decides. The verdict is unscientific.

How the verdict is decided
The verdict grades both layers: the paradigm this work assumes, and how the work was carried out inside it. Both must be scientific for the whole thing to be scientific. A clean method inside an unscientific paradigm is unscientific. An unscientific method inside a better paradigm is unscientific. A split on either layer is mixed. The worse layer decides.
1·This work
Did this work test its claim with methods that are independent, falsifiable, and non-circular?
SCIENTIFIC
This work claims that dressing wounds with carbolic acid prevents pus, fever, and deep suppuration, so amputations, compound fractures, and abscesses heal cleanly. All three tests pass.
Independently Verifiable
Pass
The outcomes were a wound discharging pus, a patient running a fever, or a patient dying, and anyone at the bedside could see those.
Falsifiable
Pass
Had his carbolic-dressed amputations festered and died at the old hospital rates, the claim would have been falsified, and he left the failed cases in the record.
Non-Circular
Pass
The dressing came from a theory, but the outcomes, pus, fever, and survival, were counted by eye, and the eye assumed no answer.
Why
Pus, fever, and death were visible at the bedside. Dressed wounds rotting at the old rate would have killed the claim, and he kept his failures in the record. The dressing came from a theory, but the outcomes were judged by eye. The verdict falls at the paradigm, which reads every clean wound as germs killed.
2·Paradigm · Germ Theory / Allopathic Medicine
Does the framework this work assumes pass the three tests?
UNSCIENTIFIC
Independently Verifiable
Fail
The microscope showed moving rod shapes in the pus; that those shapes were rotting the wound is the theory talking, not the lens.
Falsifiable
Fail
The one case that festered and showed organisms under the lens was named an exceptional case of decomposition already present, so the failure protected the claim instead of testing it.
Non-Circular
Fail
A clean wound was read as germs killed by the acid, and a festering wound as germs that survived it, so every outcome said the theory was right.
Why
Germ theory says invisible airborne particles land in wounds and rot them. Nobody in this work ever saw that landing. The lens showed moving rod shapes in pus that had already formed, and the theory supplied the cause after the fact. When a dressed case festered anyway and its pus showed those shapes, Lister called it decomposition already inside the wound, an exception rather than a challenge. When a wound healed, he read it as the acid having killed the germs; when it did not, the germs had survived. Every outcome confirmed the premise. The model also treats pus and decomposition as invaders to be chemically killed, rather than asking what condition of the tissue produced the breakdown, and the suppressed discharge is then counted as the cure.
