1861 · Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis
Die Aetiologie, der Begriff und die Prophylaxis des Kindbettfiebers
What this work is
Semmelweis's 1861 book on childbed fever in Vienna's maternity hospital. He compares the clinic run by doctors and students, who came from dissecting corpses, with the clinic run by midwives. He reports that chlorine handwashing cut deaths in the doctors' clinic, and blames decomposing corpse matter carried on the hands.
Then and now
Semmelweis showed that chlorine handwashing cut the deaths of mothers in the doctors' clinic. The medicine of his day rejected him and kept its bad-air theory. Germ theory later made him a founding hero, though he blamed corpse matter and never named a germ.
Verdict
SCIENTIFIC
The work follows the scientific method and does not operate inside a theoretical framework. The verdict is scientific.
1·This work · no theoretical framework
SCIENTIFIC
Follows the scientific method. No theoretical framework attached.
2·Paradigm · Basic Epidemiological Comparison
NOT APPLICABLE
No theoretical framework. The study verdict decides.
How the verdict is decided
This work does not operate inside a theoretical framework. Using hospital records, billing codes, or diagnostic names as labels on visible events is not the same as depending on that framework. The verdict is the work methodology score alone.
1·This work
Did this work test its claim with methods that are independent, falsifiable, and non-circular?
SCIENTIFIC
This work claims that doctors carried decomposing corpse matter on their hands to delivering mothers, and that chlorine handwashing cut deaths in their clinic from about one in ten mothers to about one in eighty. All three tests pass.
Independently Verifiable
Pass
The registers recorded births and dead mothers, and anyone can count those without believing anything about corpse matter.
Falsifiable
Pass
If the washings had been enforced and mothers kept dying at one in ten, his own tables would have shown it and his claim would have been dead.
Non-Circular
Pass
Mothers landed in each clinic by a weekday rotation set years before him, and the outcome was a dead body, so nothing built from his theory sorted the groups or counted the dead.
Why
The registers count births and dead mothers, which anyone can recount. If the washings had been kept and mothers had gone on dying, his own tables would have shown it, and he printed the rise after the washing stopped. Mothers reached each clinic by a weekday rotation set before him, and the outcome was a death, so nothing built from his theory sorted or counted anyone.
2·Paradigm · Basic Epidemiological Comparison
The three tests do not apply. There is no theoretical framework.
NOT APPLICABLE
Why
The method is a before-and-after count of dead mothers in two defined groups, plus a year-by-year record across 75 years of the same hospital. No instrument in the chain needs a theory to produce its reading. The chlorine wash came from his idea about corpse matter, but the outcome is a body, not a reading that his idea had to interpret first. Someone who thinks the fever came from miasma, or from nothing at all, still sees the same registers and the same drop after 1847. That is why there is no framework to score here, and the study verdict stands alone.
