The Interpretation of Dreams
1900
Freud's book on what dreams are and how to read them. He argues that every dream fulfils a wish, usually one the dreamer has pushed out of awareness, and that the remembered dream is a disguised version of that wish. He distinguishes the dream as recalled from its hidden meaning, describes the mechanisms of disguise, and works through many of his own dreams and his patients' dreams using free association. The final chapter sketches a model of the mind with an unconscious layer.
