Can Sex Improve Nasal Function?—An Exploration of the Link Between Sex and Nasal Function
Verdict
SCIENTIFIC
The study follows the scientific method and does not operate inside a theoretical framework. The verdict is scientific.
1·Study methodology · no theoretical framework
SCIENTIFIC
Follows the scientific method. No theoretical framework attached.
2·Paradigm · Basic Epidemiological Comparison
NOT APPLICABLE
No theoretical framework. The study verdict decides.
How the verdict is decided
This study does not operate inside a theoretical framework. Using hospital records, billing codes, or diagnostic names as labels on visible events is not the same as depending on that framework. The verdict is the study methodology score alone.
1·Study methodology
Did this study test its claim with methods that are independent, falsifiable, and non-circular?
SCIENTIFIC
This study claims that sexual intercourse with climax improves nasal breathing in people with stuffy noses for up to an hour to the same degree as a nasal decongestant spray. All three tests pass.
Independently Verifiable
Pass
Alongside the subjective rating line, a portable flow meter measured the physical flow of air through the nose, which anyone can verify without a theoretical model.
Falsifiable
Pass
If nasal airflow and breathing ratings had stayed flat after sexual climax or failed to match the nasal spray readings the next day, the claim would have failed directly in the recorded numbers.
Non-Circular
Pass
Measuring how much air moves through a person's nose before and after sex or nasal spray does not assume in advance that sexual climax clears a stuffy nose.
Why
The authors took people with stuffy noses and checked their breathing at five times: before sex, right after climax, and thirty minutes, one hour, and three hours later. The next day, the same people used a nasal spray and repeated those five checks. At each point, participants marked a rating line for how clear their noses felt and breathed into a portable meter that measured physical airflow and resistance through their nostrils. A rating line alone turns speech into a number, but the meter recorded physical air moving through the nose. If sex had left their noses blocked while the spray opened them, the airflow readings would have shown it. Both measures improved for an hour.
2·Paradigm · Basic Epidemiological Comparison
The three tests do not apply. There is no theoretical framework.
NOT APPLICABLE
Why
This study does not depend on any theoretical framework to make its comparison work. It takes people who already have stuffy noses and compares what happens to their nasal breathing after two physical actions on back-to-back days: having sexual intercourse to climax and using a nasal decongestant spray. A stuffy nose clearing up and air flowing through the nostrils are physical events that exist regardless of what medical theory someone holds. The study does not sort participants with a test built from an unverified disease model, and it does not interpret machine signals as invisible entities. Someone who rejects mainstream medicine entirely can watch the same before-and-after airflow readings and reach the same conclusion.
From the study
For evaluation of nasal breathing, we used a visual analogue scale (VAS). Additionally, we used a portable rhinometric device to measure resistance and nasal flow.
Sexual intercourse with climax can improve nasal breathing to the same degree as application of nasal decongestant for up to 60 minutes in patients having nasal obstruction.
